East 7th Street Railings , 2008

oil on canvas
36 x 36 inches

Private collection.

242 East 7th Street, ca. 1841

Unprotected by any landmarks designation, a wonderful row of early 1840s townhouse with outstanding matching stoops still stand on East 7th Street between Avenue C and D.  The East Village once had scores of fine homes, before the march of the tenement buildings spelled their doom.  These stoops on East 7th Street have elaborate wrought iron scrollwork at the top landing of the stoop.  This feature appears primarily on Manhattan’s East side.
