The subject of this painting is 44 King Street, 1840, in the Charlton Van Dam Historic District in Manhattan.
In the late 1830s and early 1840s, the handrail ends in a spiral in the horizontal plane, not the vertical plane as in earlier examples. The spindles and newel post under the spiral handrail are often half length, resting on square or round pedestals.
